Today's game v. Russia was one of the most unusual hockey games we have seen. Definitely the most deafening! USA came out with confidence, dominating in Russia's end. Within seconds USA was called for two penalties and we were down to a 5 on 3 when Russia scored. Shortly thereafter, still in the first period, Cash stopped a shot and the rebound went in off the arm of a teammate, to make it 2-0, Russia, after the first period. Unfortunate, but this can happen in hockey. USA did not panic.
To make matters worse, Paul Schaus was checked into the boards from behind in the second period and the referee called a penalty on Schaus! The USA crowd went wild! Booooo! "Did you not see that dangerous hit from behind??!!"
USA did not back down and Adam Page lifted the puck into the net off a rebound, putting USA on the scoreboard at 2-1. Hope was restored.
Finally, in the third, Taylor shot a bullet from the circle and scored BUT IT WAS RECALLED and it remains unclear as to why. Taylor was the first to ask the ref to check the replay which we were all watching on 4 jumbo screens. It looked like a goal. Not so said the referee.
And that was it. USA 1 Russia 2.
The athletes chilled with their families at the hotel after the game. Now time to regroup. Just have to beat Canada in the semi finals on Thursday for an opportunity to defend the GOLD on Saturday. GO USA!!!
